We are able to help you resolve your small claims dispute about 10 times faster than small claims court by using online arbitration.
Congratulations. You just spent a year living in an old, poorly-maintained apartment with an eerie laundry room and an invisible landlord, and you’re finally moving out. Whether you’ve just graduated, or have already started working at your first full-time job - again, congrats - you’re probably looking forward to moving out, and moving up! Suddenly, you realize you haven’t received your security deposit from your last apartment. Your landlord never sent it to you. In fact, your landlord says they’re keeping it to repair damages, which is new, since you left the place exactly as you found it. It seems like it’s time for you to go to court.
This type of case is usually taken care of in Small Claims Court, a local government institution that allows individuals to file a case under a certain amount (usually around $10,000) and ‘pro se’ (without having to hire a lawyer). The Pros? Well, you just read them. You’re not required to hire a lawyer, you can file a claim for a low amount, and the procedure is supposed to be much faster than the traditional court system. But, there are quite a few Cons as well.
Claiming that security deposit through Small Claims Court is a lot of work: before you even get to court, you’ll need to do your research to understand what you’re getting into, file the right claim, pay court and administrative fees (which usually amount to hundreds of dollars), gather evidence, make copies of the evidence for the court, and wait for your hearing (which can take months). And even if you win your case, you aren’t guaranteed to receive the money you are owed, because that’s a whole different bag of worms.
Doesn’t sound fun, right? Between court and administrative fees, the extensive research, and the time spent waiting for your court hearing, not to mention the time you’ll have to spend in court, small claims disputes take up so much of your time, your energy, and your money for issues that should be resolved much more quickly.
You shouldn’t have to worry about a long process, or doing hours of research to get your security deposit. And you shouldn’t have to hire a lawyer to explain your case to you. That stuff all sucks. It’s not fun to do, and it’s burdensome. That’s why we built Zeyo.
At Zeyo, we are working to make your security deposit dispute as efficient, stress-free, and cheap as possible. We built what's called an Online Dispute Resolution platform, which is a fancy way of saying that we can help people resolve issues online, as opposed to in a court. We have an arbitrator (basically a dispute resolution professional) look at the evidence from you and your landlord, and make a neutral decision, all online. How it works: you follow a simple online filing process, upload your evidence to the platform, attend a short video conference hearing with your arbitrator, and receive a decision.
Security deposit issues can take up far too much time & effort. By moving the process online, you can reach a fair resolution much more quickly. Questions? Feel free to chat with us below, or drop us a note at email@example.com.
